Activity Title
Confronting SARS-CoV-2 and
the COVID-19 Pandemic
Description
Annie Quysner, MD - Presentation 1
This lecture will include a definition of Sars-CoV-2 and COVID-19. The discussion will cover symptoms of COVID-19 and an algorithm for COVID testing. Testing options discussed include; antigen, antibody and molecular testing. Finally, how does testing improve patient care as well as caveats when utilizing and applying these testing options.
Megan Philips, Ph.D. - Presentation 2
Part one will cover the rationale and benefits of confirming negative rapid antigen test results for respiratory illnesses from the perspective of the laboratory. Part two will identify key reasons to bring the confirmatory test in-house and how it benefits the patients and physicians the laboratory serves.
John Tamerius, Ph.D. - Presentation 3
This session will discuss key events in the battle against COVID-19, including: contributions of NIH’s RADx, FDA, and CDC; structural features of SARS-COV-2 and their use in diagnosis, prevention and treatment; two modes of target cell entry and their importance; genome sequencing; Variant analysis; lessons learned; and potential future impact.
Intended Audience
This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals who have an interest in Sars-CoV-2 and COVID-19.
Learning Objectives
Annie Quysner, MD - Presentation 1
1. Define the clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2.
2. Discuss the clinical presentation and typical disease progression of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.
3. Describe the types of tests available for detection of SARS-CoV-2.
Megan Philips, Ph.D. - Presentation 2
1. Identify the reasons to confirm a negative antigen test results using a molecular test from the perspective of the physician and laboratory.
2. Understand how confirming a negative antigen test result changes patient interaction.
3. Recognize potential benefits to confirming negative antigen test including patient care and public health.
4. Identify rationales to bring the testing in-house and potential criteria for instrument selection.
5. Understand how bringing the confirmation test in-house allows for increased flexibility for the laboratory to respond to respiratory illnesses without requiring multiple specimen collection.
John Tamerius, Ph.D. - Presentation 3
1. Discuss the structural features of SARS-CoV-2 and their use in molecular and antigen-based assays.
2. Identify the mechanisms of Target Cell Entry by SARS-CoV-2, the unique mode employed by Omicron and its consequences.
3. Assess the achievements flowing from our battle against COVID-19; the needs revealed, and potential impact on the future.
