Osteoporosis Evaluation and Therapy: For Clinical Laboratorians

 

Description

This is a program to introduce the learner to the pathophysiology of osteoporosis as well as the scope of the problem. The evaluation of osteoporosis will be reviewed, as well as, ways to prevent and treat osteoporosis to improve bone strength and prevent fractures. Management and serial monitoring will be discussed. Finally, illustrative cases will assemble this information into a complete picture.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals, physician - scientists who have an interest in bone disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Discuss the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and disease states that contribute to it.
  • Predict the best ways to use markers of bone turnover in the evaluation of osteoporosis.
  • Recall indications to begin treatment and ways to evaluate the effects of treatment.
