Pediatric Lyme Disease 

“An Epidemic Within a Pandemic!”


Description

Nearly 30% of the estimated 476,000 people in the US each year who are diagnosed and treated for Lyme Disease are ages 0-19. Lyme disease has been called “The Great Imitator” because it often presents in children with flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, malaise and headache. It can also present with symptoms similar to COVID. Lyme Disease is frequently misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. If left untreated, the bacteria that cause Lyme Disease can attack many systems of a child’s body, including the skin, heart, nerves, and joints.

This activity is intended to provide healthcare professionals with the following Lyme Disease information:
1) epidemiology;
2) disease presentation;
3) testing and diagnosis;
4) disease progression and management;
5) case presentations including atypical presentations;
6) medical summary and public awareness.

Intended Audience

Pediatricians, representatives of physician office laboratories, urgent care centers and any other allied health professionals or health care researchers interested in hearing the latest information regarding the prevalence of Lyme disease in children.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the prevalence and impact of Lyme Disease in the pediatric population.
2. Explain the clinical importance of early testing, identification, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme Disease.
3. Discuss the need for greater Lyme Disease awareness in the medical community as well as the general patient population.
